FEATURED SHOW
Sunday, May 28, 5:15 PM
Real Friends, Have Mercy, Tiny Moving Parts, Broadside, NothingNowhere @ The Broadberry – $22 in advance/$25 day of show (order tickets HERE)
I am but a simple creature, you guys. I may enjoy almost all styles of music at one time or another, but I just can’t pretend that I don’t have a seemingly limitless soft spot for emo. I always end up feeling like I should apologize for it, too, but to tell the truth, the only thing about this show I feel like apologizing for is the slight sticker shock I’m sure all of us felt when we clicked the ticket link. Then again, I’d certainly say that at least four of the five bands on this bill are worth $4.50 each, so even that seems justifiable on further consideration. FEATURED SHOW
Saturday, May 20, 9:30 PM
Bash & Pop, Long Arms @ The Camel – $15 in advance/$18 day of show (order tickets HERE)
OK so I know there are shows on this week’s itinerary with greater popular appeal than this one. I know most of you are probably sitting there thinking, “Bash & Pop? Who even are they?” I know the only person I can be sure is more excited than me about this show is James Menefee, and his band is opening up. But regardless of all that, I have to put this show at the top of the list this week, precisely because so few of you probably know who Bash & Pop are–which is a crime, if you ask me. The RVA hip hop scene has been constantly growing, thriving, and producing tons of great stuff since quite a while before I started writing about it (which was 7 or so years ago). However, sometimes it feels really difficult to tell outsiders where to dive in. Thankfully, this high-profile EP release show is finally providing me with a killer hook to get all of you fully immersed. Time to dive in.  Continue reading “RVA Shows You Must See This Week: 5/10-5/16”

Blush Face, On The Water, The Wimps @ Hardywood – Free!

We all know live music gets taken for granted in Richmond, so when there’s a free show featuring some great local acts, we have to take advantage of it, right? Right! So glad you agree with me! In that spirit, I’ll go ahead and mark you down as going to Hardywood this Saturday evening and give you a little preview of the awesome music you’ll get to hear. FEATURED SHOW
Friday, May 5, 9 PM
First Friday Benefit For Girls Rock RVA, feat. Clair Morgan, Atta Girl, Big Baby, Georgie Isaacs @ The Camel – $6 in advance/$8 at the door (order tickets HERE)
First Friday, y’all! It’s always great, especially when this time of year comes around–it’s warm enough to go walking around at night without heavy jackets, but nowhere near as deathly hot and humid as it’ll get in a couple of months. There’s a ton of stuff to do on First Friday every month, too, and a lot of it is free! Nonetheless, I’m gonna encourage you to shell out a little bit of cash for your entertainment on this particular First Friday, because this edition of Clair Morgan’s First Friday residency at The Camel is being used to benefit a very good cause, one you should definitely back.

Sunday, April 30, 9:15 PM
Fulton Lee, Ban Hatton, The Talkies @ The Camel – $5 (order tickets HERE)

If you were really jonesing for live music this weekend, you could just go to The Camel on Sunday around noon and stay for the next twelve hours since they have three shows going on that day. But since most people don’t have 12 hours to spare, I’ll limit my recommendation to just one of those shows: the diverse night bill starting at 9:15 headed up by Fulton Lee with Ban Hatton and The Talkies underneath. FEATURED SHOW
Thursday, April 27, 8 PM
Those Manic Seas, Post Sixty Five, Lightfields @ The Camel – $5 (order tickets HERE)
Well, it’s certainly been a long time coming. Those Manic Seas, the band that will always probably be best known for having a mannequin with a TV set for a head in the frontman role, have been generating a buzz around Richmond for several years now. There was a point, probably two years ago now, when they were on the cusp of releasing their debut LP. Unfortunately, that particular deal didn’t work out, and the band ended up leaving their label and deciding to release the LP themselves, through Pledge Music. Now, after years of waiting, it has finally arrived. Continue reading “RVA Shows You Must See This Week: 4/26-5/2”

FEATURE SHOW
Saturday, April 22, 8 PM
The Make Up, Puff Pieces, Cigarette, DJs Marty V & Adam A @ Strange Matter – $13 in advance/$15 day of show (order tickets HERE)
Oh hello there. I write these columns while moonlighting from my part-time job in retail hell, and the week after holidays really sucks for me, so you shouldn’t look to me for much energy this week. However, if you do want a ton of energy, look no further than Strange Matter this Saturday night–for The Make-Up has returned!  Continue reading “RVA Shows You Must See This Week: 4/19-4/25”

FEATURED SHOW
Friday, April 14, 8 PM
Diet Cig, Daddy Issues, Waiting For Silence @ Gallery 5 – $10 in advance/$12 day of show (order tickets HERE)
There are a lot of people out there who think punk rock is about being tough. And it is, but not in the way you might think it is if you’re just looking at pix of the Ramones and the Sex Pistols. When punks are tough, they’re tough because they stay real and stay true to themselves, in the face of an entire world telling them that what they are isn’t cool. And by that standard, Diet Cig are punk as fuck, regardless of how loud, fast, and noisy their music is or isn’t. Continue reading “RVA Shows You Must See This Week: 4/12-4/18”

Hardcore fans are stoked, because it’s that time of year once again! Time for the 11th Annual United Blood hardcore festival, happening this weekend at the Canal Club. I’ve been aware of this festival every year that I’ve been doing this column, but up until now I’ve never written about it because I’d always heard it was sold out weeks in advance. This year, though, it appears there are still a few advance tickets and weekend passes available, so if you’re still on the fence, now’s the time to pull the trigger!
