RVA Shows You Must See This Week: 6/14-6/20

Sunday, June 18, 7 PM
Fit For An Autopsy, Tombs, Moon Tooth @ Strange Matter – $15 (order tickets HERE)
Regarded by some as “the Lord’s day,” it’s only fitting that for denizens of the local metal scene, this Sunday night becomes the prime opportunity this week for a total metal overdose. This week’s featured show is only the first of two brutal metal shows happening this Sunday night, with start times staggered to allow diehard headbangers to hit both. Read about the second show below, but for now, it’s time that we discuss Fit For An Autopsy.  Continue reading “RVA Shows You Must See This Week: 6/14-6/20”

RVA Shows You Must See This Week: 6/7-6/13

Tuesday, June 13, 7 PM
Lee Ranaldo, Steve Gunn, Meg Baird @ The Broadberry – $20 (order tickets HERE)
I am really stoked about this show. A confession for you, gentle reader: while I readily acknowledge the godlike greatness of Kim Gordon and the irreverent charm of Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo was always my favorite of Sonic Youth’s three singer/songwriters. He didn’t jump into the spotlight much, but if he had one song on a Sonic Youth album, it was guaranteed to be an absolute killer and the perfect mixtape pick. Look at the record: “Wish Fulfillment,” “Mote,” “Karen Revisited,” “Pipeline/Kill Time,” fucking “Eric’s Trip”… the man’s work speaks for itself. RVA Shows You Must See This Week: 5/31-6/6

Saturday, June 3, 2 PM
A Good Day In RVA IV: The Fourthcoming, feat. McKinley Dixon & Friends, The You Go Girls, Majjin Boo, The Milkstains, Fat Spirit, Blush Face, VV, Positive No, Opin, Dharma Bombs, Wester Green, Magnus Lush, Anousheh, Gull @ Hardywood – Free!
I don’t really get out too much anymore, y’all. For a girl who writes a lot about live music, I spend most nights typing into this machine, then crashing before midnight so I can get to work by 8 AM the next morning. It’s a bummer, and one of the biggest reasons that it’s a bummer is all the new RVA bands I haven’t gotten a chance to see live yet. Fortunately, the Good Day RVA folks are back yet again with the fourth edition of their annual summer-kickoff showcase of outstanding local bands, offering the perfect opportunity for all of us to catch up on what we’ve been missing around town while munching on awesome food-truck snacks and quaffing tasty craft beer (or Coke Zero if you roll like I roll). And since this show is free, on a weekend, and over before 11 PM, I might actually make it out! That would be a nice change. Continue reading “RVA Shows You Must See This Week: 5/31-6/6”

RVA Shows You Must See This Week: 5/24-5/30

Sunday, May 28, 5:15 PM
Real Friends, Have Mercy, Tiny Moving Parts, Broadside, NothingNowhere @ The Broadberry – $22 in advance/$25 day of show (order tickets HERE)
I am but a simple creature, you guys. I may enjoy almost all styles of music at one time or another, but I just can’t pretend that I don’t have a seemingly limitless soft spot for emo. I always end up feeling like I should apologize for it, too, but to tell the truth, the only thing about this show I feel like apologizing for is the slight sticker shock I’m sure all of us felt when we clicked the ticket link. Then again, I’d certainly say that at least four of the five bands on this bill are worth $4.50 each, so even that seems justifiable on further consideration. RVA Shows You Must See This Week: 5/17-5/23

Saturday, May 20, 9:30 PM
Bash & Pop, Long Arms @ The Camel – $15 in advance/$18 day of show (order tickets HERE)
OK so I know there are shows on this week’s itinerary with greater popular appeal than this one. I know most of you are probably sitting there thinking, “Bash & Pop? Who even are they?” I know the only person I can be sure is more excited than me about this show is James Menefee, and his band is opening up. But regardless of all that, I have to put this show at the top of the list this week, precisely because so few of you probably know who Bash & Pop are–which is a crime, if you ask me. RVA Shows You Must See This Week: 5/10-5/16

Friday, May 12, 8 PM
Trust The Vibes Tour, RVA Face Off, feat. Noah-O, Cadillac Cat, J-Slim, Peter $un, Easalio, Kelow Latesha, Miah Travis, Harsh, Lul Big Brother, music by Prince Gravy @ Strange Matter – $5 in advance/$7 at the door (order tickets HERE)
The RVA hip hop scene has been constantly growing, thriving, and producing tons of great stuff since quite a while before I started writing about it (which was 7 or so years ago). However, sometimes it feels really difficult to tell outsiders where to dive in. Thankfully, this high-profile EP release show is finally providing me with a killer hook to get all of you fully immersed. Time to dive in.  Continue reading “RVA Shows You Must See This Week: 5/10-5/16”

Doug’s Pick Of The Week: Blush Face & more at Hardywood!

Saturday, May 6, 6:30 PM
Blush Face, On The Water, The Wimps @ Hardywood – Free!

We all know live music gets taken for granted in Richmond, so when there’s a free show featuring some great local acts, we have to take advantage of it, right? Right! So glad you agree with me! In that spirit, I’ll go ahead and mark you down as going to Hardywood this Saturday evening and give you a little preview of the awesome music you’ll get to hear.
