A Good Day In RVA IV: The Fourthcoming, feat. McKinley Dixon & Friends, The You Go Girls, Majjin Boo, The Milkstains, Fat Spirit, Blush Face, VV, Positive No, Opin, Dharma Bombs, Wester Green, Magnus Lush, Anousheh, Gull @ Hardywood – Free!
I don’t really get out too much anymore, y’all. For a girl who writes a lot about live music, I spend most nights typing into this machine, then crashing before midnight so I can get to work by 8 AM the next morning. It’s a bummer, and one of the biggest reasons that it’s a bummer is all the new RVA bands I haven’t gotten a chance to see live yet. Fortunately, the Good Day RVA folks are back yet again with the fourth edition of their annual summer-kickoff showcase of outstanding local bands, offering the perfect opportunity for all of us to catch up on what we’ve been missing around town while munching on awesome food-truck snacks and quaffing tasty craft beer (or Coke Zero if you roll like I roll). And since this show is free, on a weekend, and over before 11 PM, I might actually make it out! That would be a nice change. Continue reading “RVA Shows You Must See This Week: 5/31-6/6”

Real Friends, Have Mercy, Tiny Moving Parts, Broadside, NothingNowhere @ The Broadberry – $22 in advance/$25 day of show (order tickets HERE)
I am but a simple creature, you guys. I may enjoy almost all styles of music at one time or another, but I just can’t pretend that I don’t have a seemingly limitless soft spot for emo. I always end up feeling like I should apologize for it, too, but to tell the truth, the only thing about this show I feel like apologizing for is the slight sticker shock I’m sure all of us felt when we clicked the ticket link. Then again, I’d certainly say that at least four of the five bands on this bill are worth $4.50 each, so even that seems justifiable on further consideration. Bash & Pop, Long Arms @ The Camel – $15 in advance/$18 day of show (order tickets HERE)
OK so I know there are shows on this week’s itinerary with greater popular appeal than this one. I know most of you are probably sitting there thinking, “Bash & Pop? Who even are they?” I know the only person I can be sure is more excited than me about this show is James Menefee, and his band is opening up. But regardless of all that, I have to put this show at the top of the list this week, precisely because so few of you probably know who Bash & Pop are–which is a crime, if you ask me. Trust The Vibes Tour, RVA Face Off, feat. Noah-O, Cadillac Cat, J-Slim, Peter $un, Easalio, Kelow Latesha, Miah Travis, Harsh, Lul Big Brother, music by Prince Gravy @ Strange Matter – $5 in advance/$7 at the door (order tickets HERE)
The RVA hip hop scene has been constantly growing, thriving, and producing tons of great stuff since quite a while before I started writing about it (which was 7 or so years ago). However, sometimes it feels really difficult to tell outsiders where to dive in. Thankfully, this high-profile EP release show is finally providing me with a killer hook to get all of you fully immersed. Time to dive in. Blush Face, On The Water, The Wimps @ Hardywood – Free!
We all know live music gets taken for granted in Richmond, so when there’s a free show featuring some great local acts, we have to take advantage of it, right? Right! So glad you agree with me! In that spirit, I’ll go ahead and mark you down as going to Hardywood this Saturday evening and give you a little preview of the awesome music you’ll get to hear. First Friday Benefit For Girls Rock RVA, feat. Clair Morgan, Atta Girl, Big Baby, Georgie Isaacs @ The Camel – $6 in advance/$8 at the door (order tickets HERE)
First Friday, y’all! It’s always great, especially when this time of year comes around–it’s warm enough to go walking around at night without heavy jackets, but nowhere near as deathly hot and humid as it’ll get in a couple of months. There’s a ton of stuff to do on First Friday every month, too, and a lot of it is free! Nonetheless, I’m gonna encourage you to shell out a little bit of cash for your entertainment on this particular First Friday, because this edition of Clair Morgan’s First Friday residency at The Camel is being used to benefit a very good cause, one you should definitely back.

Fulton Lee, Ban Hatton, The Talkies @ The Camel – $5 (order tickets HERE)
If you were really jonesing for live music this weekend, you could just go to The Camel on Sunday around noon and stay for the next twelve hours since they have three shows going on that day. But since most people don’t have 12 hours to spare, I’ll limit my recommendation to just one of those shows: the diverse night bill starting at 9:15 headed up by Fulton Lee with Ban Hatton and The Talkies underneath.
