Yes, I’m picking an outdoor show on a day where it will probably rain because it’s Friday freakin’ Cheers, people! Bad weather be damned, it’s the opening week for the 32nd Season and that alone should be reason enough to go. But luckily enough, Stephen Lecky and the Venture Richmond crew have a great show on tap to kick-off what should be another phenomenal season of live music on Brown’s Island, beautifully situated in the heart of downtown Richmond.

This Friday marks the arrival of a day it feels like the entire Richmond scene has spent all of 2016 (or maybe even longer than that) waiting for. It’s New Lions & The Not Good Night release day for Clair Morgan, and this second album from the man/group is nearly four years in the making! At this point, we can’t tell you whether this new album is gonna live up to all the hype it’s gotten over the past however long, but based on the two songs that have hit the internet in advance, it sure seems likely.

We’re joined for the first time this week by my pal Doug Nunnally, who you may know from his weekly WDCE radio show, Sound Gaze; his prolific writings for RVA Magazine, New Noise Magazine, and other outlets; his work as founder and editor of the Off Your Radar weekly email newsletter; or even his hosting of a weekly music trivia night at Rare Olde Times. I liked working with Doug at RVA Mag so much, I invited him to contribute to my new venture. He came through with a much-appreciated show pick of his own, which will be appearing weekly in this space from here on in! Man, the talent on the bill for this month’s songwriting night at The Camel is just crazy. Hopefully, the success of Lucy Dacus has made you all less reluctant to roll your eyes at the term “singer-songwriter” here in town; this is a great night to see a different side of the Richmond scene that people rarely talk about.

Woo, it’s 4/20, bros! Smoke ’em if you got ’em! Or whatever the appropriate lingo is here. I may not be a big-time stoner, and may not have any real knowledge of what it’s like to be high (you feel kinda stupid and then you get a headache, in my brief experience, but that was 25 years ago…), but I sure know one thing: a grind show is a very appropriate way to celebrate this (rather dubious) occasion.

Oh hey, I’m back! Did I miss anything? Let me stop playing; after a month of no show column, I’m sure I missed quite a lot. But I sure picked a jam-packed week to come back–and nothing happening this week is more impressive than this hellacious punk/metal double bill, taking over the Broadberry Saturday night! I’ve done at least a little bit of research, and it certainly appears from where I’m sitting that this is the only date on either of our headliners’ current tours where they play together. Richmond’s music scene wins once again–and you’d be a fool not to take advantage of it.
